Neil's tools of the trade...this is all the tools that Neil uses to make "stone fence post".  With this very small group of hand tools, plus a lot of skill and common sense.  Neil is able to make stone post in the same matter at the early settlers did.  We found it interesting that the tools Neil uses are from the era of the early settlers.  Neil is VERY well know for his work with the Kansas limestone in Victoria area.  The day we were with Neil he was getting ready to take a "load" of his work to El Dorado, Kansas which is about 200 miles or so away.  Neil work can be seen in the yards of many homes, ranches and business in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado.

1.  "Feathers"... 2. Wedge... 3. Cold chisel 4. Hammer... 5. Brace & Bit...

Step one [really step one is to find a stone], Neil uses the brace and bit to drill a hole in the limestone.  The hole is called feather; sorry I forgot to ask Neil why the hole is called a feather and not just a hole.  The drilling of the hole is much faster than one would think, I would say about as fast a drilling a hole in soft wood.  Certainly much easier and faster that drilling a hole in Ozark oak!

Step two: Once a group of "feathers" have been drilled.  Then Neil places two "feather tools" [#2  as shown in the first photo] into the hole...

The wedge is place between the two feather tools,  with a few taps with the hammer the stone fence post is cut.  Any trim or clean up work is done with the cold chisel; I was VERY surprised how fast and easy Neil made to entire process look.  The sign of a true craftsman!!!

Neil on the left...Clark on the right with a smile on his face.  I am not sure why Clark is so happy; maybe because he has his hands in his jeans.  Clark seems to spend a lot of time with a smile and his hands in his jeans...strange!!!
